Snail Mail/Fax Queries

(NOTE: I warn about this on another page, but it's important and I'll repeat it here: Sometimes a production company will give us an address that's on a studio lot. That means that they have an affiliation with that studio on a current production or a deal in development. When that project ends, however, they often move off the lot and we have no idea they're gone - unless you find out and tell us. They like true stories, family dramas, social issues, young adult themed and children's stories, historical and/or biographical material. One of the few companies that will also accept your work in the form of a play, book proposal, small press book, or even simply a concept for a film which could be developed into a screenplay.

MINDSTORM CREATIVE PRODUCTIONS, 1434 Sixth St., #1, Santa Monica, CA 91401 or FAX them (310) 393-6622. Ben Zaitz is their Development Assistant and wants to see scripts that have strong character development,and a solid story line. Female-driven scripts, drama or romantic comedy, will get their attention. Mindstorm is also on the look-out for bright, up and coming directors with videos they'd like to pitch.

RED HOTS ENTERTAINMENT, 3105 Amigos Dr., Burbank, CA 91504-1806. Dan Pomeroy is their Senior VP of Development. They're looking for feature film and television material, but also produce music videos. Takes them about 5 months to respond to your query. They're one of the few who will also accept full screenplays so long as you include a Release Form, a 1-page synopsis, and a stamped, self-addressed envelope. Takes another thirty days on top of the 5 months to get a response to a screenplay. Frankly, I'd opt for a straight-out query letter rather than send the full script, if I were you. No use wasting an expensive full script if they aren't interested in the genre. Just a suggestion.

VANGUARD PRODUCTONS, 12111 Beatrice St., Culver City, CA 90230. Terence O'Keefe is the president and the only contact name I have. Wants your query with a synopsis and resume. Takes about 3 months to respond.

INTERNATIONAL HOME ENTERTAINMENT, 1440 Veteran Ave., #650, LA, CA 90024. Jed Leland, Jr. is assistant to the president and your contact person. They're looking for stories that have international appeal, but won't respond to even a query unless you include a SASE. Do not call them, do not send your manuscript. Just the query with that SASE.

JOADA PRODUCTIONS, INC, 1437 Rising Glen Rd., LA, CA 90069. Joan McCall is their Senior Vice President of Development. This is a company that's well connected. They'll consider just about any genre for feature films as well as TV, though they seem to prefer comedy, suspense dramas, horror, sci-fi, thrillers, action-adventure, and family fare. If you're pitching a true story, include news articles or other documentation with your query.

FOUNTAIN PRODUCTIONS, 500 S. Buena Vista, Burbabk, CA 91521-0180. Peter M. Green is both president and contact person. They're after material for the family, kids and teens. They work with nearly two dozen writers a year, but here's the challenge for you: you must be referred to them by someone in the industry.

EAST EL LAY FILMS, 12041 Hoffman St., Studio City, CA 91604. Daniel Kuhn is the president and, I suspect, their contact person as well. They're after low-budget films for TV and even documentary material. Query with a synopsis and your resume.

ASHLEY PRODUCTIONS,5225 C Crest Dr., #71-340, Riverside, CA 92507. I'll just quote from the e-mail I received from their office: "We accept screenplay submissions for short and feature films. Submissions should be made through an agent or manager or attorney. However, if you are not represented by an agent, manager or attorney, we will still accept an unsolicited script, but there is a process. First, send us a one page synopsis of the screenplay. Please send synopsis ... via standard mail. We no longer accept synopsis via e-mail. When and if we decide it is of interest to Ashley Productions, we will request a copy of the script and provide a release form that must be signed and returned with the script. Inquries should be directed to our Development Department."

BROTHERS & SISTERS sent me this e-mail:"Esther, you're contributing by rising the number of possibilities for a script to be accepted by a producer... We prefer hard mail queries 'cause ...my producer likes to see the 'real' script in her hands, in the traditional manner. We are very 'romantic' with writing around here. The type of films that would be more interesting for us are independent, powerful, risky stories. No big-studio-mega-production scripts ... The genre? The themes? Anything! A good story is a good story, no matter which genre it is.". So ... send those queries to Producer Lola Salvador, BROTHERS & SISTERS, Avd. Their e-mail to me invites you to submit queries to him, but didn't indicate any particular genre or designate whether or not they prefer features to TV. Their credits include Stepford Wives, Sleuth, Rambling Rose and Ruby Ridge.

THE ASYLUM, 6671 Sunset Blvd., Building 1593, LA, CA 90028. I noticed in the new Pacific Coast Studio Directory that this company prefers feature film material. David Latt e-mailed me with the following information: "Yes (we will read queries from unagented writers). If we make the script, then I direct and my partners produce; there are no other producers. Also our budgets run between $100K - $300K. Please send treatments to my attention via (standard) mail."

ALEXANDER/ENRIGHT AND ASSOC., 201 Wilshire Blvd., 3rd floor, Santa Monica, CA 90401. Query Sarah Koepple, development associate. Primarily television producers, they especially like women-oriented dramas, but aren't limited to them exclusively. Documentary material okay, too. No violence or horror, no unsolicited matieral. If they're interested in your query, they'll invite you to submit a script.

THE AMERICAN MOVING PICTURE COMPANY, INC., 838 N. Doheny Dr., #904, LA, CA 90069. Feature film scripts. Send Query with synopsis (half page or less) to the attention of Isabel Casper, vice president creative affairs.

AVALANCHE ENTERTAINMENT, 11041 Santa Monica Blvd., #511, LA, CA 90025. High concept scripts that appeal to an audience under 40; feel-good stories, music-oriented is fine. Query Richard Hull.

CANVAS HOUSE FILMS wants material that's family oriented, but appeals to grownups as well as to the younger crowd. Send query letter, resume and production history (if any) to Mitch Teemley at 624 E. Cedar Ave., #A, Burbank, CA 91501

RANDWELL PRODUCTIONS, INC. 11111 Santa Monica Blvd., #525, LA, CA 90025-3339. VP Tom Kageff is your contact person. They look for both feature and TV material. NO sci-fi, NO westerns. Mail your query which includes your brief synopsis. They have high standards, work with few writers per year and almost never ask for outside material, so make sure your presentation is the work of a real pro (that's you). Amelia Earhart is among their credits.

MONAREX HOLLYWOOD CORP, 11605 W. Pico Blvd.,#200, LA, CA 90064. Chris D. Nebe is president and your contact man. They work with 5 to 10 writers a year and are interested in a variety of genre: action, horror, dance, romantic comedies. Screenplays for features, documentaries, direct-to-video only, no one acts, treatments or book manuscripts.
